A couple of days ago, I down-loaded the beta version of Topaz Megapixel AI to my PC ( Windows 10, i7, 16GB ram, GTX650 Ti graphics card with 2GB memory ) It is free for a 30 day trial. But that said, the performance of Topaz Gigapixel AI 4 is a huge improvement on the earlier version.

At least that is if you’re comparing it to the likes of Photoshop.

This works impressively well for parts of the image with fine details, however smoother areas such as the water, sides of buildings, or bushy trees do look somewhat artificial when compared to the original.Whilst the image quality produced by Gigapixel AI is the best I have seen of any enlarging software performance is the Achilles heel. The AI model here is adding detail to the image that was not originally captured.

It has somehow extrapolated or interpolated detail that just was not there. The sign on the side of the building is sharp and detailed, and if we could read Portuguese, we’d probably know what it said! There is more detail in that image than in the original.

However, the Gigapixel image is just startling: in the small town that is way down the hill in the valley, if you look at the main street one block up from the waterfront, you can see the cars in fine detail, you can nearly make out their make and model, and you can almost read their license plates. The images were then scaled as accurately as possible to 2500 pixels on the long size so it would display easily on this site. We then did two further enlargements of the original JPEG in Affinity Photo and in Photoshop to the same size. The original image was enlarged in Gigapixel at its maximum recommended size of 6x, which yielded an image of an astonishing 32000 x 21361 pixels. The images on this site can only be displayed at a fairly small size and resolution, so I then had to downsize it to 2500 x 1669, also in Affinity using the Lanczos 3 resizing algorithm, after doing the following procedures first. The RAW image was processed in Affinity Photo from a DNG into a high-quality JPEG at its native resolution of 6016 x 4000.
